… “The movement of the falling leaf – For good punches, it is necessary that the movement of the body is transmitted by the direct route onto the body part of the object that is used for hitting, to the spot that is receiving the impact. This principle is used in aikido when we use a staff. In techniques that are based on the body movement in aikido, the goal is not the impact, but the control of the stability and the movement of the partner transmitting the impulse from your center using the lever (stiff link), onto the uke’s center. In this way, all the direct use of force is excluded, unless we want to reach maximum efficiency. Taken into consideration that the straight lines are predictable, which gives uke the ability to take on the role of the tori (the person that is in control and is performing the technique), it is incomparably more efficient to change the direction of movement in the manner of the falling leaf. In this way without the use of force, uke is unstable, similarly to uke being in the water with waves and is insensibly put into the parter.” – Jelena Vrzić 6 DAN, Aikikai Hombu Dojo
